Tamiya World Cup Japan - Diary Index Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 3 - Saturday - Qualifying The qualifying day is all-important to getting a good grid position for the finals. We started with a drivers meeting which may well have been very interesting and informative but as it was all in Japanese we had no idea what on earth was going on. I was asked to say a few words on behalf of the Aussie team at this meeting. Once I got the microphone I can’t remember much but I am told it made sense! Plucka entered two shells into the concours, or beauty contest as it was called, and both were picked out in a group of about eight, Plucka was pretty stoked! Everyone seems to be having great fun so far even if unsure of what is to happen. Firstly two practice sessions and then 3 qualifiers are to be run today. Qualifying is extremely close. The system used is single fastest lap from any of the qualifying sessions is used to rank everybody on the grid for the finals, not the overall 5 min session time! This meant that people would go for bonzai laps when their batteries were fresh. Another thing into the bargain was up to 18 people on the track at once. As you could only imagine there was major carnage and not a lot of race etiquette happening. It was almost impossible to find a clear bit of track. If you crashed or spun it didn’t really matter as the single fast lap was all that counted. Another magnificent dinner tonight at a Japanese BBQ restaurant, this is where you get raw meat strips and cook them yourself on the hot plate in the middle of you table, this is now a favourite amongst some of the racers! |
